Here is where the “rewiring” idea comes from, and where the small number of genuine exceptions actually sit.
Where the wiring myth comes from
Most people have seen two very different things and mentally filed them together. The first is a home smart lock, the kind that replaces your handle or sits on your existing cylinder. The second is a commercial access control setup, the card readers and glass-door releases you walk through at an office tower or a gym in Business Bay. Those commercial systems are wired. They use an electric strike or a magnetic lock powered by a 12 or 24 volt supply, run back to a controller and often a backup battery in a cupboard somewhere. That is a building electrical job, and it is nothing like putting a lock on your apartment door.
A home smart lock is self-contained. The motor, the keypad, the fingerprint reader, the Bluetooth and Wi-Fi radios all draw from the batteries inside the lock body. Nothing connects to your mains. Nothing needs an electrician with a DEWA connection.
How a battery smart lock actually gets power
The batteries live inside the lock, usually behind the interior panel that faces into your home. On most models you slide off a cover, drop in four AA cells, and close it. Some of the newer locks Altix supplies use a rechargeable lithium battery pack instead, which you pop out every several months and charge with a USB cable, the same way you charge a phone.
A full set of batteries typically lasts somewhere between six and twelve months for a normal household. Heavy use, a big family, staff coming and going, or a holiday-home door that gets opened by guests all day will run them down faster. The lock warns you well before it dies, both in its app and with a low-battery beep at the door, so you are not caught out.
One UAE-specific note worth making: heat matters for battery choice. A door that faces direct afternoon sun, a villa gate, or anything exposed to real outdoor temperatures in a Dubai summer is better served by lithium batteries, which hold their voltage in extreme heat far better than cheap alkaline cells. For an interior-facing apartment door in an air-conditioned building, standard AA batteries are completely fine.
What happens on install day (no wiring, but yes, some fitting)
No rewiring does not mean no work. It means no electrical work. A typical install goes like this: we remove your existing lock or cylinder, fit the smart lock to the same door, align it, and set it up in the app. For a retrofit that keeps your existing euro cylinder, this is often a 20 to 30 minute job with a screwdriver and nothing more. For a full handle-set replacement, there is some mechanical fitting to the door, but still no cable and no power supply.
What actually decides how involved your install is is not wiring. It is your door. In the UAE that usually means one of these:
- Apartment entrance doors are typically steel, fire-rated, and fitted with a standard euro-profile cylinder. These take a retrofit or a compatible replacement lock without touching the door’s fire rating, as long as you do not drill new holes into a fire door.
- Aluminium doors, common on villa side entrances and glass-fronted apartments, are narrow-stile and need a lock designed for that slim profile.
- Wooden villa doors are the most flexible and accept the widest range of handle-set smart locks.
- Glass doors need a specific glass-door lock, usually clamped without drilling the glass.
None of these need rewiring. What they need is the right lock matched to the door, which is the real question worth asking before you buy.
The genuine exceptions
There are a few cases where power wiring does come into the picture. None of them apply to a normal home door, but for completeness:
- Full commercial access control for an office, clinic, or building entrance, where you want card readers, an electric strike or maglock, and central software. That is wired, and it is a different service.
- Video door locks or smart locks integrated into a doorbell and mains system, where an owner specifically wants continuous power. This is a choice, not a requirement, and it is rare in UAE homes.
- A door with no existing lock hardware at all, for example a newly fabricated gate, where the mounting has to be built first. Still no rewiring of the lock itself.
If you are a homeowner or a tenant putting a smart lock on the door you already use every day, none of this is your situation. It runs on batteries and that is the end of it.
Renting? This is actually good news
Because there is no wiring and no permanent electrical change, a battery smart lock is the renter-friendly option in the UAE. A reversible retrofit that works with your existing cylinder can be removed at move-out and the original lock put back, leaving no trace. No cables in the wall to explain to a landlord, no fire-door modification to justify to your building management. Ask your landlord first as a courtesy, pick a reversible model, and you are set.
