DIY suits you if your door is a standard wooden or metal apartment door, you’re comfortable with a screwdriver and following an app’s setup steps, and you’re not changing the actual lock mechanism. Budget 30 to 60 minutes for your first one.
When you should call a professional
Get a pro if any of these apply:
- You’re replacing a mortise lock. Swapping the full lock body inside the door means precise cutting and alignment. Get it wrong and the door won’t close, or the bolt won’t seat properly.
- You have an aluminium profile or glass door. These are everywhere in the UAE and they’re unforgiving. Aluminium doors have narrow stiles with little margin for error, and glass doors need a lock designed specifically for them plus careful fitting. This is not a learn-on-the-job situation.
- The door is heavy villa hardware or a custom size. Alignment matters more, and a misaligned smart lock drains batteries fast because the motor has to fight the bolt on every turn.
- You want the warranty protected. Some brands only honour the warranty when the lock was installed correctly, so a professional fit pays for itself if anything goes wrong later.

First, door types. A lot of UAE apartments and villas have aluminium or glass doors rather than the solid timber doors these locks are often designed around.
