Usually, yes. If the new lock uses the same mortise lock body as the old one, it drops into the same pocket in the door and the holes line up. You check three things before you buy: the lock body code, the door thickness, and whether the new panels cover the old holes. Get those right and the swap takes about an hour with no new cutting.
Lots of UAE homes handed over between 2018 and 2021 came with a developer-fitted smart lock or had one added soon after. Many of those locks are now five to eight years old. The keypad goes dim, the fingerprint reader stops reading, the motor grinds, or the app the lock used isn’t supported any more. In most of these homes the door is still in good shape, so the job is a lock swap, not a new door.
This post is about replacing that lock. If you’re fitting a smart lock for the first time, start with our door measuring guide. If you want to go back to a normal key lock, read our switching back post.
Should you repair the old lock or replace it?
Try the cheap fixes first. Fresh batteries fix more “dead” locks than anything else. Our troubleshooting post covers the common faults.
If that doesn’t work, use this table.
| What’s wrong | Repair | Replace |
|---|---|---|
| Lock dead, works again with new batteries | Yes, nothing else needed | No |
| Keypad or fingerprint reader not responding, lock under 3 years old | Check warranty, ask for a panel replacement | Only if parts aren’t available |
| Motor grinding or bolt not throwing fully | Sometimes the lock body alone can be changed | Usually, if the lock is over 5 years old |
| App no longer supported, or brand has left the UAE | No real fix | Yes |
| Water or sand damage to the outside panel | Rarely worth it | Yes |
| Lock works but you want new features | Not a repair job | Yes, if the body fits |
Spare parts are the deciding factor. For unbranded locks bought online, you often can’t get a matching panel or circuit board at all. For a known brand, a single part can cost close to a whole new lock once you add the call-out. Our lifespan post explains which parts wear out first and why.
We tell customers to replace the lock when the repair quote is more than half the price of a new one.
How do you check if a new lock will fit the same holes?
Take the old lock’s inside panel off. It’s usually two or three screws, sometimes under the battery cover. Then check these four things.
1. The lock body code
The lock body is the metal box inside the door edge. Many smart locks here use one of a few standard sizes, and the size is often stamped on the body or printed on the faceplate.
| Lock body | Backset | Centre distance | Where you’ll see it |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6068 | 60 mm | 68 mm | Timber apartment and villa doors |
| 5085 | 50 mm | 85 mm | Some timber and steel doors |
| 2585 | 25 mm | 85 mm | Narrow aluminium doors and gates |
The first two digits are the backset, the distance from the door edge to the centre of the handle spindle. The last two digits give the gap between the spindle and the key cylinder. A new lock that ships with the same body slides straight into the existing pocket. A different body means the pocket needs cutting or filling, and the job gets bigger.
If there’s no code stamped anywhere, measure it yourself. Door edge to the centre of the spindle hole gives you the backset. Spindle centre to cylinder centre gives you the centre distance.
2. Door thickness
Every lock lists a thickness range. The EZVIZ DL05, for example, fits doors from 30 to 110 mm. Most apartment and villa front doors in Dubai are well inside that, but measure anyway. Thick villa doors with decorative panels sometimes aren’t.
3. Spindle and cable hole
The spindle is the square bar that connects the inside and outside handles. Smart locks also run a cable through the door from the outside panel to the inside one. If the old cable hole is smaller than the new lock needs, it has to be widened slightly. That’s a five-minute job on timber and a slower one on steel.
4. Panel footprint
The new panels need to cover the old holes and any marks the old panels left. A new lock with a slimmer panel may leave the old screw holes showing. You can fill and paint them, or pick a lock with a panel as wide as the old one. Measure the old panel’s height and width before you buy.
What if the new lock doesn’t match the old holes?
It’s still usually fixable.
- New body, same backset, different centre distance. The pocket often stays the same size, but the cylinder hole moves. The old one gets covered by the new panel or filled.
- Bigger body than the old one. The pocket gets cut deeper on timber. On steel doors with a welded pocket, this can be a hard stop. Our steel door post covers why.
- Narrow aluminium frame. You’re limited to narrow 2585-type bodies. Our aluminium door post explains the limits.
- Fire-rated apartment front door. Don’t cut it without the building’s permission. Cutting can affect the fire rating. Our mortise and fire door post covers this in detail.
If you rent, check your tenancy contract before changing the lock. Keep the old lock so you can refit it when you leave.
Worked example: replacing a dead lock in a Dubai Hills apartment
This is how most of our replacement jobs go.
- Sunday, 20:00. The keypad on a 2019 smart lock goes blank. New batteries don’t help. The family gets in with the backup key.
- Monday, 09:00. They take the inside panel off and send us four photos on WhatsApp: the faceplate, the door edge with a tape across it, the inside with the panel off, and the outside panel.
- 09:30. The faceplate shows a standard body. Backset 60 mm, centres 68 mm. So it’s a 6068. The door is 45 mm thick timber.
- 09:40. We suggest the EZVIZ DL05 6068 at AED 499. It uses the same body, fits 30 to 110 mm doors and its panel is about the same width as the old one.
- We quote AED 450 for fitting in Dubai. AED 949 in total.
- Wednesday, 10:00. Our technician arrives, takes off the old lock and checks the pocket. It’s clean, with no rust or swelling.
- 10:20. The new body slides into the old pocket. The spindle and cable holes line up, with no cutting.
- 10:45. The panels go on. They cover the old holes fully.
- 11:00. The technician tests the bolt from inside and outside, and with the key.
- 11:15. The family enrols fingerprints and sets new codes. They delete the old lock from the old app.
One visit, no door damage, and the old lock goes in a box in case the landlord ever wants it back.

A same-body swap on a timber door in Dubai usually comes to about AED 949 all in. A job where the pocket needs cutting costs more, and we’ll tell you before we start.
What can go wrong?
The most common mistake is buying a lock with the wrong body because the product photo looked right. Always match the body code, not the look.
The second is ignoring the old cylinder. Some locks hide a mechanical key cylinder under a cover. If the new lock’s cylinder sits in a different place, you get an extra hole to fill.
Swelling and rust come next. Doors in humid areas like Dubai Marina or JBR can swell around the pocket, and steel doors near the sea can rust inside. The new body may need the pocket cleaning first.
Then there’s the old app. If you don’t remove the old lock from its app, people with access may still show up in old logs. Delete it before you bin it.
Some buildings fit the front door lock themselves as part of a master key system. Ask the building before you touch it.
When shouldn’t you replace it yourself?
Don’t force a new body into a pocket that’s too small. A bolt that doesn’t throw fully leaves your door less secure than the old lock did.
Leave fire-rated doors uncut. On a steel door, new holes need the right drill and cutter. A chipped or bent skin can’t be undone.
If the door itself is warped or the frame has dropped, a new lock won’t fix it. The bolt will still drag. Get the door adjusted first.
