Smart Lock for a Home Office Door in the UAE: Keeping Kids and Guests Out of the Work Room

Yes, you can put a smart lock on a home office or study door, and on most UAE villa and apartment doors it’s a one-hour job. If the door already has a lock with a key, it almost always takes a Euro-profile cylinder. Swap that cylinder for a smart one like the ALTIX ONE and you keep your handle, add fingerprint, code and card entry, and get a log of who opened the room.

If the door only has a privacy latch, or it’s a light hollow-core door, the job changes. We cover both below, plus the cheaper option when all you really need to lock is a drawer.

Who is this for?

We get this request from three kinds of homes.

  • Parents working from a villa study in Arabian Ranches, Mirdif or Al Reem who are tired of a five-year-old walking into a client call.
  • Freelancers and consultants in JLT, Dubai Marina or Sharjah apartments who keep client files, laptops or samples in the spare room.
  • Families with guests staying for weeks over winter, where the office also holds passports, Emirates ID copies and the household paperwork.

Each time, the brief is the same: the people who work in the room get in with a finger, nobody else gets in, and anyone inside can always get out.

What lock is on your study door right now?

Look at the inside and outside of the door before you buy anything. What’s already there decides what fits.

What you seeWhat it usually isSmart option
Keyhole outside, thumbturn or keyhole inside, handle separateMortise sashlock with a Euro cylinderSmart cylinder (easiest)
Small turn button inside, coin slot or nothing outsidePrivacy latch (bathroom or bedroom type)Needs a new lock body cut in, or use a cabinet lock instead
Round knob with a push button in the middleTubular latch, common on lighter interior doorsNot a good base for a smart lock

Most Dubai villa studies and many newer apartments have the first type. The cylinder is the brass or chrome piece with the keyhole, held in by one long screw on the edge of the door.

If you’re not sure, send us one photo of each side of the door and one of the edge, and we’ll tell you which one you have.

Which smart lock fits an interior door?

Interior doors in UAE homes are usually solid-core or hollow-core wood, around 40 mm thick. That’s thinner than most front doors, which sit closer to 50 mm or more. Full front-door smart locks are built for thicker, heavier doors and for a lock body that’s often bigger than what’s in an interior door.

So for a study door, the choice is usually between these three.

The ALTIX ONE takes Euro cylinders from 60 to 90 mm long, with 5 mm and 10 mm extenders in the box. A 40 mm interior door normally has a cylinder between 60 and 70 mm, so it sits inside that range. Measure yours from the fixing screw to each end before you order. Our door measuring guide shows how.

Check one more thing. The outside smart knob is about 67 mm across. If your handle sits very close to the cylinder, the knob can rub against it. A quick look with a ruler settles it.

A hollow-core door is the one to be careful with. It’s two thin skins over a cardboard honeycomb with a small solid block where the latch goes. You can fit a cylinder if a sashlock is already there. Cutting a new mortise lock body into a hollow-core door is a different story, because there often isn’t enough solid timber to hold it. In that case, lock the drawer instead, or replace the door with a solid-core one.

Can you still get out of the room in an emergency?

You must be able to leave the room without a code, a finger or a key. With children in the house, this matters most.

The ALTIX ONE has a thumbturn on the inside, about 34 mm across. Anyone inside turns it and walks out. No code needed, even if the batteries are flat.

Don’t fit anything that needs a code or key from the inside. A child who wanders in, pushes the door shut and can’t get out is a frightening ten minutes for everyone. A thumbturn inside avoids that completely.

From outside, the mechanical key is your backup. Keep one key somewhere outside the office, not in the desk drawer you’ve just locked.

How should you set up access for the family?

The TTLock app lets you give each person their own fingerprint, code or card. This setup works for most homes we fit.

  • You and your spouse get fingerprints, plus a personal code each for when your hands are wet or full.
  • Kids get nothing. If they need to come in, they knock.
  • The cleaner or nanny gets a timed code that only works during cleaning hours, for example Saturday 10:00 to 12:00. Change it whenever staff change.
  • An IT technician or a colleague dropping off equipment gets a one-time code, which stops working after one use.
  • Guests staying over get nothing, and the room stays locked while they’re in the house.

Every unlock goes into the history in the app. If a laptop moves or a file goes missing, you’ll see which code or finger opened the door and when. You view that log when your phone is near the lock over Bluetooth. If you want it on your phone from anywhere, add a G2 gateway in the same room or the next one (AED 179.99).

One habit to build: the product page doesn’t list auto-lock for the ALTIX ONE, so plan on locking the door yourself when you leave the room. On a sashlock, the handle still works the latch. Until you throw the bolt, the door just pulls open like normal.

Worked example: a villa study in Arabian Ranches

  1. A mother of two works from the downstairs study four days a week. Her kids are 6 and 9. A live-in nanny and visiting grandparents are in the house most of the winter.
  2. She sends three photos on WhatsApp: both sides of the study door and the edge. We see a sashlock with a keyed Euro cylinder, a lever handle and a solid-core 40 mm door.
  3. She measures the old cylinder: 35 mm on each side of the screw, 70 mm in total. That’s inside the 60 to 90 mm range.
  4. We confirm the ALTIX ONE fits and book a fitting slot. Fitting in Dubai is AED 350.
  5. The technician takes the old cylinder out, fits the new one with the right extender, checks the knob clears the handle, and tests the thumbturn from inside.
  6. She enrols two fingerprints for herself and two for her husband. Each of them sets a personal code too.
  7. She gives the nanny a recurring code for Sunday and Wednesday, 09:00 to 10:00, so the room gets cleaned while she’s there.
  8. The 9-year-old tests the door the same evening. It doesn’t open. He knocks.
  9. Total spend: AED 599.99 for the lock and AED 350 for fitting, so just under AED 950. She skips the gateway, because she’s home most days and checks the log at the door.

When shouldn’t you buy a smart lock for the study?

  • You’re renting and the door has no lock at all. Cutting a lock body into a landlord’s door changes the property. Ask first. Our renters’ guide covers what usually needs permission.
  • It’s a hollow-core door with a knob latch. Lock the drawer or cupboard instead, or swap the door.
  • What you’re protecting is small. If it’s one laptop and a file box, a CB4 in the desk drawer at AED 189.99 does the job for a third of the price.
  • The room is also a guest bedroom. If guests sleep in there, you’ll be handing out codes every week. Lock a cupboard inside the room instead.
  • You need to meet a strict client or regulator security standard. A home study lock helps, but it won’t replace whatever your client or your free zone requires for data. Check that first.

If you handle client personal data from home, the UAE’s data protection law (Federal Decree-Law No. 45 of 2021) expects reasonable security for it. A locked room with an entry log helps with that, alongside passwords, encryption and how you store paper files. DIFC and ADGM businesses have their own data rules on top.

FAQ

Can I put a smart lock on an interior door?

Yes. If the door already has a keyed Euro cylinder, a smart cylinder like the ALTIX ONE swaps straight in. Doors with only a privacy latch need more work.

Will the ALTIX ONE fit a 40 mm interior door?

Usually, yes. It takes cylinders from 60 to 90 mm long, and a 40 mm door normally has a 60 to 70 mm cylinder. Measure yours before you order.

Can my child get locked inside the office?

No, as long as you fit a lock with a thumbturn on the inside. The ALTIX ONE has one, and it works without batteries or a code.

Do I need Wi-Fi for a study door lock?

No. It works over Bluetooth, and fingerprints, codes and cards are stored on the lock. Add a G2 gateway only if you want remote logs or remote unlock.

What happens if the batteries die?

You’ll get low-battery warnings in the app first. If they run out, use the mechanical key from outside. From inside, the thumbturn still works.

Can I give the cleaner access only on certain days?

Yes. Create a recurring timed code in TTLock, for example Saturdays 10:00 to 12:00. It won’t work outside those hours.

Can I fit it myself?

Yes, if you’re comfortable taking out a cylinder with one screw. If the length or handle clearance is borderline, have us fit it for AED 350 in Dubai or Sharjah.

Is a drawer lock enough instead?

Often, yes. If you mainly need to protect files, a laptop or documents, the CB4 fingerprint drawer lock at AED 189.99 covers it without touching the door.
