For most doors in the UAE, between 20 minutes and an hour. A smart cylinder swap on a standard apartment door takes 15 to 30 minutes. A full smart handle lock takes 45 to 90 minutes when the new body matches your door. A glass door lock clamps on in about 20. Those numbers hold only when the door cooperates, and that is the part nobody warns you about. A dropped hinge or a wrong-size cylinder can stretch a half-hour visit into an afternoon, and some buildings want paperwork before anyone touches a screwdriver. Here are the real timings, what stretches them, and the waiting that happens before install day.
The realistic timings, lock by lock
A smart euro cylinder is the quickest. The old cylinder comes out with one screw, the new one slides into the same slot, and the job is done in 15 to 30 minutes including testing. Nothing gets drilled and the handles stay put. This is the route most UAE apartment doors end up taking, and it is why a fitter can do three of these in a morning.
An inside-only retrofit is quicker still. If your door has a thumbturn, the motor unit clamps over it and turns it for you. Ten to 20 minutes, no tools beyond a screwdriver, and the outside of the door never changes.
A full smart handle lock is the one that earns its hour. The old mortise body comes out, the new one goes in, and both panels bolt through the door. When the new body matches the old pocket, 45 to 90 minutes is honest. When it does not match, the fitter is cutting fresh recesses into the leaf, and on a timber villa door that is a two hour job done properly. On steel, longer.
Glass door locks sit at the easy end again. They clamp onto the glass edge with gaskets, no drilling, about 20 to 30 minutes. The time goes into positioning, because a clamp fitted crooked chews the gasket and looks wrong forever.
Whatever the lock, add ten or 15 minutes for setup, meaning the admin account, fingerprints, entry codes, and pairing a gateway if you bought one.
What the installer actually does in that hour
Watching a good fitter is instructive, because the fast part is not the lock. The first ten minutes go on the door itself. Does it swing true, does the latch meet the strike plate cleanly, do the multipoint bolts throw without forcing. Fitters check this before removing anything, because a smart lock bolted onto a misaligned door gets blamed for problems the door already had.
Then the swap. Old hardware off, new lock on, squared up, fixed. The motorised parts get calibrated so the lock learns where locked and unlocked sit on your particular door.
The last stretch is testing, and this is the part people skip when they rush. Lock and unlock with the door open, then closed. From inside, from outside, with the app, with the fingerprint, with the backup key. A fitter who leaves without testing the mechanical key has not finished the job.
What quietly doubles the time
The door, almost always. Heavy villa doors drop on their hinges over the years, and in summer heat aluminium frames move enough that a latch which lined up in January binds in July. If the fitter has to re-hang the door or adjust the strike plates first, add half an hour to an hour.
The wrong cylinder is the other classic. Euro cylinders come in sizes, 30/30 or 35/40 for example, and a smart cylinder that does not match your split either will not fit or sits proud of the door face. If nobody measured before ordering, install day turns into measuring day and the real work happens on a second visit.
Timber doors hide their own surprise. If a previous lock was fitted badly, the pocket may be chewed out or oversized, and the fitter has to pack and rebuild it before the new body sits tight. There is no honest shortcut here. Filler and hope is how you get a rattling handle in three months.
The waiting that happens before install day
The install is minutes. The lead-up is where days go, and it pays to know that before you promise your family keyless entry by the weekend.
Stock is the first factor. If the lock you want is already in the UAE, delivery in Dubai and Sharjah is usually next day and installation can often be booked within the same week. Order an unusual model from abroad and you are waiting two or three weeks before anyone can fit anything.
Buildings are the second. On a fire-rated apartment door in a managed Dubai tower, whether that is Downtown or JVC, some building managements want an NOC before door hardware changes. That is a form and a few working days, not a battle, but it is days you should plan for. We covered which buildings ask and why in our NOC guide. Villas are simpler. Your door is yours.
Commercial premises are their own case. Offices and shops in Dubai that fall under SIRA rules should confirm requirements before changing access hardware, which adds approval time no installer can compress.
When a fast install is the wrong sign
Speed is good. Rushing is not, and a few promises should make you pause. Anyone quoting 15 minutes for a full mortise replacement has either not seen your door or plans to skip calibration and testing. Anyone willing to fit a lock without asking whether the apartment door is fire-rated is happy drilling into a certified assembly, which becomes your problem at inspection time, not theirs. And if the fitter says your door needs re-hanging first, that is not an upsell. A smart lock on a binding door drains its battery fighting the frame and fails early. Fix the door first.
If you want to gauge whether your door is the quick kind or the slow kind before buying anything, our guide on whether you can install a smart lock yourself walks through the same checks fitters use.
How Altix keeps the visit short
The half-hour install starts before the visit. Send us a photo of your door edge and the current cylinder on WhatsApp, tell us the door type and the emirate, and we confirm the model and size before anything is booked. That is the whole trick. The installs that run long are nearly always the ones where the lock met the door for the first time on install day. Message us on WhatsApp and we will tell you honestly how long yours will take.
Frequently asked questions
Can I fit a smart lock myself in under an hour?
The clamp-on and cylinder types, often yes, if the size is right. Full handle locks are worth paying a fitter for, because the cutting and calibration is where DIY goes wrong. Measure before you buy either way.
How long does a glass door smart lock take to install?
About 20 to 30 minutes. They clamp onto the glass with gaskets rather than drilling, and most of the time goes into getting the position exactly right before tightening.
Does the installation time include app setup?
Usually, but say it upfront. Setup adds ten to 15 minutes for accounts, fingerprints, and codes. One thing worth doing before the fitter leaves: make sure the admin account is yours, not theirs.
Do I need to prepare anything before the installer arrives?
In a managed apartment building, check whether your building wants an NOC, especially on a fire-rated door. Know your door material, and have your Wi-Fi password ready if a gateway is being paired.
What does installation cost if it is not bundled with the lock?
A standalone callout in Dubai commonly runs between AED 100 and 300 depending on the door and the distance. Ask for the lock and installation prices together before ordering, because bundled quotes usually come out cheaper than booking the two separately.
Altix supplies and installs smart locks across the UAE and quotes honest timings for your exact door. Send a photo of your door on WhatsApp and we will tell you what it needs and how long it will take.
