Most smart locks sold in the UAE won’t go on a sliding door. They’re made for swing doors, where a latch pushes sideways into the frame. A slider locks with a hook bolt that swings up or across and grabs a keeper, and the handle sits in a slim edge profile with almost no room behind it. What works on a slider is a lock designed for sliding and glass doors, such as the Altix GX Pro, and only after someone has checked how your panel meets the frame.
On a balcony slider in a tower, start with a different question: can a child open that door? We’ll cover both.
If you’re pricing a glass door lock rather than working out what fits, our glass door lock pricing guide covers cost. This post is about the mechanism.
Where are sliding doors in UAE homes?
In a typical UAE home you’ll find sliders on:
- balcony doors in towers across Dubai Marina, JLT, Downtown, Business Bay and Al Reem Island
- the garden or pool doors off the living room in Arabian Ranches, The Springs, Dubai Hills Estate and Mira villas
- majlis doors that open onto a courtyard in older Jumeirah and Al Barsha villas
- glass partitions and meeting rooms in offices in Business Bay, DIFC and Al Quoz
- shop fronts and showroom doors
The villa garden slider is often the easiest way into the house. It faces the back, nobody sees it from the street, and the family leaves it on the built-in hook latch for years. The balcony slider twenty floors up is the opposite. Nobody is breaking in through it, but a four-year-old can open it.
How does a sliding door lock work?
A swing door lock throws a latch or a deadbolt sideways into a strike plate. A sliding door can’t do that, because the panel moves along the frame instead of turning into it.
So a slider uses a hook bolt. When you turn the thumb-turn or lift the handle, a curved steel hook rotates out of the edge of the panel and catches a keeper on the frame or on the other panel. Pulling the door sideways drags the hook into the keeper harder, which is what holds it shut.
Three things follow from that, and each one matters for smart hardware.
- The edge profile of an aluminium slider is thin. There’s often no room for a standard mortise body, and the handle is a flush pull or a slim lever.
- The hook only engages if the panel lines up with the keeper. If the rollers have worn or the track is full of sand, the hook misses by a few millimetres.
- On a two-panel slider, one panel is usually fixed. The lock goes on the moving one, on the edge where the two meet (the interlock) or on the edge that closes against the wall frame.
This is why a standard smart lock, even a slim one built for aluminium swing doors, doesn’t fit. Our Altix RX, for example, is listed for swing doors only.
Can you put a smart lock on a balcony slider?
You can, if the door and your building allow it. But on a balcony, think about safety before security.
A UAE study of newspaper reports from 2005 to 2016 found 81 children who fell from windows or balconies. Their average age was 4.9, 36 of them fell from balconies, and 81% of all the children in the study died. In August 2026 Dubai Police again reminded parents to keep balcony and window keys out of children’s reach and keep these areas closed when not in use.
A balcony slider on the built-in hook latch is easy for a small child to open. Lift the handle, slide. A lock that needs a code, a fingerprint or a card to open from the inside changes that, and you don’t need a key hidden on top of the curtain box. Check how a lock opens from the inside before you buy, because many open with a simple button or turn.
The catch is getting locked out on the balcony. If a child locks the door behind you, you’re stuck outside, and in July or August that’s dangerous. Keep your phone, card or code with you when you step out, and make sure an adult inside knows you’re out there.
Building rules come next. In most towers the balcony door is part of the facade, and some developers and owners’ associations restrict drilling or changing hardware on it. Check before you buy. Our post on developer NOCs explains how to ask. If you rent, get the landlord’s agreement in writing, as covered in the rented apartment guide.
For a lot of tower families the right answer is a mechanical child-safety lock mounted high on the frame, plus mesh on the railing. It costs little, needs no batteries and deals with the fall risk directly. We’d rather tell you that than sell you a lock you don’t need.
Can you put a smart lock on a villa patio slider?
Yes, and this is where it makes most sense. The villa garden slider is used all day by family, helpers, the gardener and the pool company, and it’s usually secured by nothing more than the handle’s hook latch.
A smart lock here gives you:
- codes or cards for staff, so nobody needs a key
- a time-limited code for the pool cleaner on Thursday mornings
- a log of who opened the door and when
- no key left in the inside lock, which burglars look for through the glass
The lock is only half the job, because sliders get attacked in two ways a lock can’t stop.
A panel with worn rollers or a gap at the top can be lifted out of the bottom track and tilted out, hook and all. Anti-lift blocks or a couple of screws in the top track stop this. They cost very little and take about ten minutes to fit.
Then there’s the glass. If someone’s willing to break it, the lock doesn’t matter. Laminated glass or security film deals with that, and it’s a separate job. We check the lift gap and the glass on every slider before we quote.
Which lock fits which sliding door?
Find your door in the left column.
| Your door | What fits | What else to check | Cost with us |
|---|---|---|---|
| Villa patio slider, aluminium and glass, framed | A lock built for sliding and glass doors, like the Altix GX Pro | Anti-lift blocks, roller wear, sand in the track | GX Pro AED 664.99. Fitting quoted from photos |
| Office glass slider or partition, framed or frameless | Altix GX Pro, if the glass and frame can take it | Glass thickness, where the keeper can mount | GX Pro AED 664.99. Fitting quoted from photos |
| Balcony slider in a tower | Often a high-mounted mechanical child lock is the better answer | Building rules, lock-out risk, NOC | Ask us |
| Lift-and-slide door (heavy, large panels) | Not a standard fit. The gearbox is different | Brand of the door system | Send photos first |
| Pocket door or interior timber slider | Not covered by this post | Usually needs a different lock type | Ask us |
Prices are our listed prices on the day of writing. Fitting on sliders depends on the frame, so we quote after seeing photos rather than guess.
What is the Altix GX Pro?
The Altix GX Pro is our lock listed for glass and sliding doors, in offices and homes. It opens with 3D face recognition, fingerprint, card, passcode, the TTLock app, a remote control or a mechanical key. It also has an attendance feature in the TTLock app, which offices use to record check-ins.
The product page says it’s designed for glass and sliding doors without complex modifications. That’s true for the doors it’s made for. Sliding systems vary a lot, so we still confirm from your photos how the lock and keeper will mount on your frame before you buy.
Opening the slider when you’re not home
The GX Pro talks over Bluetooth through the TTLock app. That works when you’re at the door. To send the pool cleaner a code from the office, or check the log from work, add the Altix G2 gateway at AED 179.99. It plugs in near the door and connects the lock to the internet. The lock runs on batteries, and keeping Wi-Fi on all day would drain them in weeks, so the gateway does that job instead.
What should you measure and photograph first?
Send us these and we can tell you most of what we need without a visit:
- The whole door from inside, a few steps back, showing both panels.
- The edge of the moving panel where it closes, with the door half open.
- The current handle and latch, from inside and outside.
- The keeper on the frame or the fixed panel.
- The top track, so we can see the gap above the panel.
- The width of the edge profile on the moving panel, in millimetres.
- The glass thickness, if you know it. The number is often printed in a corner of the glass.
Also tell us which way the door slides and whether it’s a two-panel, three-panel or four-panel system.
What goes wrong with smart locks on sliding doors?
Most of the problems we see start with the door.
Sand in the track is the big one here. Fine sand collects in the bottom track, the panel rides a few millimetres high or drags, and the hook misses the keeper. Owners think the lock has failed. Clean the track and check the rollers before blaming the electronics, and put track cleaning on the monthly list.
Worn or dropped rollers give the same symptom. The panel sits lower on one side, so the hook hits the keeper edge instead of catching it. A roller adjustment fixes it, and we do it as part of fitting.
Heat is next. A west-facing slider in Dubai gets direct sun all afternoon. The outside face of the lock and anything attached to the glass get hot. If your slider faces west, tell us, so we can think about where the reader sits and which unlock method you’ll lean on in summer.
Condensation catches people out too. Sliders between an air-conditioned room and a humid terrace mist up in the mornings from June to September, especially near the coast in Palm Jumeirah, JBR and Al Mamzar. Face and fingerprint readers on the outside can struggle when wet. A card or code works regardless.
On a three or four-panel system, people forget the other moving panels. Each one needs its own lock, because a smart lock on one panel does nothing if the next one slides open.
And on a balcony, plan for the lock-out before it happens, as described above.
Worked example: a garden slider in Dubai Hills Estate
This is how a job of this kind runs. A four-bedroom villa, two-panel aluminium and glass slider from the living room to the garden and pool. The family has two children, a live-in helper, and a pool company that comes on Thursdays.
- Saturday, 09:30. The owner sends the seven photos on WhatsApp. The moving panel is on the left, the edge profile is narrow, and the top track shows a visible gap above the panel.
- 09:45. We confirm the GX Pro can mount on this frame, and flag the top gap. The panel can probably be lifted. We add anti-lift blocks to the job.
- Tuesday, 10:00. Our technician arrives. He vacuums the bottom track, which is full of fine sand, and adjusts the rollers so the panel sits level.
- 10:25. He fits anti-lift blocks in the top track and checks the panel can no longer be lifted out.
- 10:40. He removes the old handle and hook latch and fits the GX Pro and its keeper.
- 11:20. Batteries in. He pairs the lock to the owner’s TTLock account, not his own, and gives the owner the admin role.
- 11:30. Face and fingerprint for both parents. A fingerprint and a card for the helper. The children don’t get a credential.
- 11:40. A code for the pool company that only works on Thursdays, 08:00 to 11:00.
- 11:45. He plugs the G2 gateway into a socket near the door so the owner can see the log and send codes from work.
- 11:55. He tests every method with the door open and closed, and checks the hook catches without anyone pushing the panel.
Hardware came to AED 664.99 for the GX Pro and AED 179.99 for the gateway, AED 844.98 in total, plus fitting quoted from the photos. Before the visit, that door was held by a hook latch a six-year-old could lift.
When should you not buy a smart lock for a sliding door?
We’d rather say this before you pay.
- If the problem is a child and a balcony, start with a high mechanical child lock and railing mesh. Add a smart lock later if you want access control too.
- If the panel can be lifted out, fix that first. A smart lock on a door that lifts off the track is money wasted.
- If it’s a heavy lift-and-slide door, don’t buy anything until we’ve seen photos, because the mechanism is different.
- If you rent and the landlord says no, don’t fit it. A removable child lock is the fallback.
- If your building hasn’t approved changes to the facade, wait for the NOC.
- If the glass is the weak point, a lock won’t fix it. Look at laminated glass or security film first.
