Yes, you can put a smart lock on a villa side gate or garden gate in the UAE. It needs three things a front door lock doesn’t. It has to be rated for full sun, dust and rain (IP65 at minimum). It has to fit a gate frame, which is usually a narrow aluminium or steel tube, not a door leaf. And on any gate with bars or gaps, it has to work from both sides, or someone outside can reach through and open it from the inside.
Get those three right and a gate lock is one of the most useful smart locks on a villa. The gardener, the pool man and the AC technician use the side gate, not your front door. A code that only works Tuesday morning keeps them out of the house and out of your phone calls.
This post is about pedestrian gates you open by hand: the side gate to the service yard, the garden gate onto the community path, the back gate to the pool. Motorised driveway gates are a different job, covered further down.
What kind of gate do you have?
Villa gates in the UAE fall into four groups. The frame decides which lock fits, so start here.
| Gate type | Where we see it | What the frame looks like | Smart lock route |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aluminium gate with a slim lock stile | Newer Dubai villas, Arabian Ranches, Dubai Hills, Tilal Al Ghaf | Flat profile 40 to 60 mm deep, often with an existing narrow mortise lock | Narrow-backset mortise smart lock. The Altix RX uses a 2585 body for this |
| Steel gate with solid panels | Sharjah, Ajman, Al Ain, older Abu Dhabi villas | Square or rectangular tube, sometimes a welded lock box | Mortise if there’s a lock box. Rim lock if the inside face is flat |
| Open bar or railing gate | Garden gates on Jumeirah and Mirdif villas, pool fences | Vertical bars with gaps a hand fits through | Double-sided lock only. A plain thumb-turn inside is a security hole |
| Timber or composite gate | Some townhouse back gates, Jumeirah Golf Estates | Wide stile, similar to a door | Treat it like an outdoor door. Check thickness and IP rating |
The third group is where people get caught, so read that section even if you skip the rest.
Why can’t you use a normal front door lock on a gate?
A front door sits under a canopy or in a recessed porch. A gate sits in the open. In the UAE that means four things the lock has to survive.
Start with the sun. Air temperature passes 45°C in July and August, and a dark metal surface in direct sun runs far hotter than the air around it. That makes the lock’s working temperature limit more important on a gate than anywhere else on the house, so find it on the spec sheet before you buy.
Dust comes next. A shamal pushes fine sand into every gap, and the first digit of the IP rating is the dust score. A “6” means dust-tight. Anything lower on a gate and you’ll be picking sand out of the keypad and the fingerprint reader.
Water is mostly irrigation, not rain. Garden sprinklers catch a lot of villa gates every evening. The second digit of the IP rating covers this. A “5” means the lock passed a low-pressure water jet test, and a “6” means a stronger jet. Neither one means it can sit in a puddle.
Salt is the one IP ratings ignore. If you’re near the sea in Palm Jumeirah, Jumeirah, Saadiyat or Al Marjan, read our salt and IP66 post for why, and what to spec instead.
For a gate, we treat IP65 as the minimum. Go for IP66 where a sprinkler or hose hits the gate directly.
Which smart lock fits which gate?
There are three ways to put a smart lock on a gate. Each suits a different frame.
| Route | How it fits | Good for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Narrow-backset mortise lock | Lock body slides into the gate stile, panels on both faces | Aluminium gates with an existing narrow lock | The body has to match the stile depth. 25 mm backset is common on aluminium |
| Rim lock | Lock box screws to the inside face, keep fixes to the gate post | Steel and timber gates with a flat inside face and no lock pocket | Needs room on the post for the keep. Check the gap between gate and post |
| Retrofit over the existing lock | Unit fits over a cylinder or thumb-turn | Rarely right for gates | Most retrofit units aren’t rated for outdoor exposure |
A standard 6068 or 5085 villa door lock almost never fits a gate. The stile is too narrow for a 60 mm backset, and cutting a steel gate tube to make room weakens it.
What about gates with bars you can reach through?
A normal smart lock has a keypad or fingerprint reader outside and a handle or thumb-turn inside. On a door, that inside handle sits behind a solid leaf. On an open bar gate, anyone on the path can put an arm through the gap and turn it, and your fingerprint reader stops mattering.
There are two ways to fix it.
- Use a double-sided lock. These need a fingerprint, code or card on both sides, so there’s no free handle to reach. The Altix S5 rim lock works this way.
- Fit a solid backing plate or mesh panel behind the lock, at least 300 mm each way, so nobody can reach the inside handle. Simple, and it works with a cheaper single-sided lock.
If you have children, check one more thing. On a pool fence gate, a double-sided lock also stops a child opening it from the garden side without a code or fingerprint. That’s a good thing. It also means everyone who uses the garden needs a way out. Enrol the adults’ fingerprints, give older children a code if they’re allowed through, and keep the mechanical key somewhere only adults can reach.
Will the lock connect to Wi-Fi out at the gate?
Often not, and this catches people out after they’ve fitted it.
Your router sits inside the villa. The side gate is 10 to 25 metres away, through block walls. Bluetooth and Wi-Fi signals both drop through concrete block.
There are two kinds of lock, and they fail differently.
A lock with built-in Wi-Fi, like the Altix S5, connects to your router directly. If the signal at the gate is weak, it drops offline and drains its batteries trying to reconnect. Before you buy, stand at the gate with your phone on your home Wi-Fi. If a video won’t load there, the lock will struggle too. A mesh node or outdoor access point near that wall usually sorts it.
A Bluetooth lock, like the Altix RX, talks to a small plug-in gateway such as our G2, and the gateway talks to your Wi-Fi. Put the gateway in a socket on the inside of the wall closest to the gate. A majlis, maid’s room or garage socket often does the job. Test the app from the street side before the fitter leaves.
Without either, the lock still works at the gate with fingerprint, code and card. You just lose remote opening, live alerts and the access log on your phone.
What does it cost to fit a smart lock on a villa gate?
| Item | Price with us | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Altix RX smart lock | AED 599.99 | IP65, 2585 narrow mortise body, fingerprint, code, card, key, TTLock app |
| Altix S5 rim lock | AED 679.99 | IP65, double-sided fingerprint, built-in Wi-Fi, Tuya / Smart Life app, 4 x AA batteries |
| Altix G2 gateway | AED 179.99 | Needed for remote access on the RX. Not needed for the S5 |
| Fitting on a gate | Quoted from photos | Depends on frame, existing lock and whether a keep plate needs making |
Prices are our listed prices on the day of writing. Check the product page before you order.
So a typical aluminium side gate with the RX and a gateway comes to about AED 780 before fitting. A railing garden gate with the S5 comes to about AED 680 before fitting.
We quote gate fitting from photos because gates vary far more than doors. Some take an hour. Some need a keep plate made for the post, which adds time.
Worked example: a side gate in Arabian Ranches
Here’s how a gate job usually goes with us.
- Saturday, 10:00. A homeowner in Arabian Ranches sends a WhatsApp photo of the side gate to the service yard. Bronze aluminium, solid panels, a lever handle and a key. The gardener and the pool company both use it.
- 10:10. We ask for five photos: the lock edge of the gate with a tape across it, the faceplate close up, both faces around the handle, the gate post where the latch catches, and the gate from 3 metres back.
- 11:00. Photos come back. Stile depth 50 mm. Existing lock is a narrow mortise with a 25 mm backset. Solid panels, no gaps to reach through. The gate faces south with no shade.
- 11:15. We ask the owner to stand at the gate and run a speed test on home Wi-Fi. It drops to one bar. The garage shares a wall with the service yard and has a free socket.
- 11:30. We quote the Altix RX (AED 599.99) and the G2 gateway (AED 179.99), plus fitting. We suggest the owner checks the community rules on exterior changes. The gate itself isn’t changing, only the lock, but the owner asks the community office anyway and gets a yes by email.
- Tuesday, 8:00. Our technician arrives early, before the gate heats up. The old lock body comes out. The RX body fits the existing pocket.
- 8:40. Panels mounted, through-bolts tightened, gaps around the outer panel sealed against irrigation spray.
- 8:50. G2 gateway plugged into the garage socket. The technician tests the app from the street side of the gate. It opens.
- 9:00. Owner sets up codes: the gardener gets a code for Saturday and Tuesday mornings, 7:00 to 11:00. The pool company gets Thursday only. Family get fingerprints.
- Next Saturday, 7:20. The gardener lets himself in. The owner gets an alert on the phone and doesn’t have to come down.
What goes wrong with smart locks on gates?
The most common one is the wrong IP rating. Someone buys an indoor-rated lock because it looked good, fits it on a south-facing gate, and the keypad gives up after one summer.
Next is a weak signal. The lock works at the gate but shows offline in the app, and the batteries drain in weeks instead of months. That’s the lock searching for a network it can’t hold. Move the gateway closer or add a Wi-Fi node.
Gate sag is another. Gates hang off one post and drop over time, especially heavy steel ones. A latch that lined up in October drags in June. A motorised bolt won’t force its way through like a key does. It stalls, retries and shows an error. Adjust the hinges or the keep before blaming the lock.
Sand in the fingerprint reader shows up after a dusty week. A dry cloth fixes it. If the reader stops reading every time, check whether the lock has a cover or shade.
The reach-through problem also turns up after fitting, when someone notices a delivery driver can open the gate from the path. A single-sided lock on an open bar gate needs a backing panel or a swap.
Hot panels catch people last. A dark lock on a gate in full August sun gets uncomfortable to touch, so the family stops using the fingerprint and switches to the code or the app. Give everyone a code from day one so nobody’s stuck.
Can a smart lock open a motorised gate?
Not by itself. A motorised sliding or swing driveway gate is driven by a motor and a control board. The smart lock world doesn’t plug into that directly.
What can work is a smart relay or opener wired to the motor’s push-button input, the same way a smart garage opener works. Our garage access post explains the input to look for and the safety check first. Treat it as a separate job from the pedestrian gate lock.
Do you need permission to put a smart lock on a villa gate?
It depends on your community and whether you own or rent.
Master developers control what the outside of a villa looks like. Emaar, for example, says any alteration to a villa needs its approval, applied for through the Home Modifications section of the community portal, and restricts changes to the exterior. Replacing a lock on an existing gate is a small change, but we haven’t seen a written rule that says it’s exempt. Check your community portal or ask the community office before the fitter comes. It usually takes a short email.
If you rent, get the landlord’s okay in writing first. New holes in a gate can’t be hidden. Our rented apartment post covers how to ask, and the same approach works for villas.
When shouldn’t you buy yet?
Hold off in four cases.
If the gate is an open bar design and you’re looking at a single-sided lock, stop. Pick a double-sided one or plan the backing panel first.
If the gate sags or the latch already drags, fix the gate first. A smart lock won’t fix a dropped gate.
If you’re on the beachfront, read our salt post first. IP65 on its own won’t be enough there.
If the gate is part of a pool fence that has to meet a specific safety rule in your community, check that rule before changing the lock.
