Put your first smart lock on the door that causes you the most key trouble, not the one that looks most vulnerable. For most UAE apartments that is the front door, because it is usually the only door and the one you hand keys and codes out for. For villas it is less obvious, because the service door by the kitchen or maid’s room is often where the real access mess lives. Here is how to decide, honestly, before you spend the money.
Start with the problem, not the door
Smart locks fix two different things: access and security. Access is the day to day mess of keys, copies, cleaners, deliveries, and family members who forget theirs. Security is keeping people out. Most people buy a smart lock for the first reason and get the second as a bonus. So the right first door is the one where your access problem is worst, which is not always the front.
Why the front door wins for most homes
The front door is the door with the most traffic and the most keys in circulation. It is where you let in family, the cleaner, the AC technician, and the occasional delivery. It is also the door you are most likely to hand a code to instead of a key, which is the whole point of going smart. In an apartment the decision is usually made for you, because you have one door. Dubai high-rises in Marina, JVC, Downtown and similar buildings almost always give each unit a single entry door, often a fire-rated timber leaf, so the front door is both the obvious and the only sensible first lock.
Security backs this up. Across break-in data the front door is the single most common way intruders get in, roughly a third of the time, ahead of back doors and ground-floor windows. A smart lock here gives you a bolt you cannot forget to throw, an access log, and no spare key under the mat.
When the back or service door deserves it first
UAE villas are built differently from the flats. Most have more than one entrance: a main or guest entrance at the front, sometimes a separate family entrance, and a service door by the kitchen, laundry or maid’s room. That service door is where a surprising amount of your access problem actually lives. It is the door the housemaid, the gardener, the cleaner and the delivery driver use. It is out of view from the street, which is exactly why it gets the least attention and the most casual key handling. Copies get made, it gets left on the latch, and nobody logs who comes and goes.
If your headache is staff and service access rather than your own comings and goings, smart-lock the service door first. You get coded entry for the maid that you can change the day she leaves, a log of when the cleaner actually arrived, and an end to the spare key that has been floating around the compound for two years. In a villa in Arabian Ranches, Al Barsha, Jumeirah or Mirdif, this is often the higher-value first lock, not the grand front door you rarely hand keys out for.
The door itself has to be worth locking
A smart lock is only as strong as the door and frame it sits in. Before you choose, look at the door honestly. A heavy timber or steel main door with a solid frame is a good home for a smart lock. A lightweight aluminium service door with a glass panel next to it is not, because anyone determined can bypass the lock entirely. If your back door is the weak point, fix the door first, then make it smart. A smart lock on a flimsy door is convenience, not security, and it is worth being clear with yourself about which one you are buying.
Exposure matters too. Many UAE service doors face a side yard or open to full afternoon sun, and heat and dust are hard on electronics. If the door you pick is exposed, choose a lock with a proper IP rating built for outdoor UAE conditions, not an indoor-rated unit that will struggle by the second summer.
A simple way to choose
Answer three questions honestly. Which door do you hand keys or codes out for most? Where are the copies you have lost track of? And who comes and goes when you are not home? If the answers point at the front door, which they will for most apartments, start there. If they point at the service door, which they often do for villas with staff, start there instead. You can always add the second lock later, and plenty of people do once they see how much easier the first one makes daily life.

Frequently asked questions
Should my first smart lock go on the front door or the back door?
For most UAE apartments, the front door, because it is usually your only door and the one you share access to. For villas with a busy service or kitchen door, the service door is often the better first choice, because that is where staff and deliveries come and go and where keys get copied.
Do UAE apartments even have a back door?
Most do not. The typical Dubai apartment has a single entry door, so the front door is your first and only smart-lock candidate. Some larger or older units have a second kitchen or service door, but that is the exception.
Is a smart lock on the back door a security risk?
Only if the door itself is weak. A smart lock does not make a flimsy aluminium door strong. If your back door is the weak point, upgrade the door and frame first, then add the smart lock for control and logging.
Can I put smart locks on both doors?
Yes, and plenty of villa owners do. Start with the door that causes the most access trouble, live with it for a while, then add the second once you know how you use it.
Does the back door need a different type of lock?
Sometimes. If it is exposed to sun and dust, which many UAE service doors are, choose a lock with a proper outdoor IP rating rather than an indoor model. The door material, aluminium, timber or steel, also affects which lock fits.
