Smart Locks for Aluminium Doors in the UAE: What Fits a Narrow Frame, and What Doesn’t

Most full smart locks sold in the UAE won’t fit an aluminium door, because they’re built around a lock body that needs 60 mm from the door edge to the handle. A typical aluminium stile runs out of metal and hits glass well before that. What fits is a narrow-stile smart lock, usually one with a 25 mm backset, or a smart cylinder that drops into the lock you already have.

You can work out which one your door needs in about ten minutes with a tape measure and your phone camera.

We’ve already published a list of slim models in Best Slim Smart Locks for Modern UAE Apartments. If your door faces the sea, read Beachfront Villa Doors in the UAE too, because salt air changes which lock survives. This post is about fit.

Which doors in a UAE home are aluminium?

In a typical Dubai villa the main entrance is timber or steel, and a lot of the other doors are aluminium:

  • the kitchen door to the service yard
  • the maid’s room or laundry door that opens outside
  • balcony and terrace swing doors
  • the door from the garage or the side passage
  • office and shop fronts in Al Quoz, Business Bay and most strip malls in Sharjah

Towers in JLT, Dubai Marina and Al Reem Island often have aluminium and glass on the balcony side as well. The main apartment door there is normally a fire-rated timber or steel door, and that has its own rules, covered in Will Your Dubai Developer Let You Install a Smart Lock?

In a villa, the aluminium kitchen door usually gets more traffic than the front door. The cook, the driver, the cleaner and the delivery rider all use it. So it’s the door people most want on a code or a card, and the one where fit goes wrong most often.

Why doesn’t a normal smart lock fit an aluminium door?

It comes down to space, in three places.

The stile is narrow. That’s the vertical part of the door on the lock side. A timber door is solid all the way across, so there’s as much depth as you need. An aluminium door has a hollow metal box on the lock side, often only a few centimetres wide, and then a glass or infill panel.

The backset is short. Backset is the distance from the door edge to the centre of the handle spindle. Most smart locks here ship with what the trade calls a 6068 lock body, meaning a 60 mm backset and 68 mm between the handle and the cylinder. On most aluminium doors, 60 mm in from the edge puts the handle and the lock’s front and back panels on top of the glass. You can’t drill through glass.

The profile is hollow. A screw holds anywhere in timber. An aluminium profile is a thin wall around an empty chamber, so the lock body has to slide into a cavity that’s already there, and the panels have to bolt through the door rather than screw into it.

Aluminium doors in the UAE usually leave the fabricator with a narrow lock body already inside. The common one is a 25 mm backset with 85 mm centres, sold as a “2585” body. Some doors use 30 mm or 35 mm backsets. Whatever’s in your door now is the best clue you’ve got.

How do you tell what your door needs in 10 minutes?

Open the door and take five measurements.

  1. Measure the backset, from the door edge where the latch comes out to the centre of the handle spindle. Around 25, 30 or 35 mm means a narrow-stile door. 60 mm or more means a standard smart lock might fit.
  2. Measure from the centre of the spindle to the centre of the keyhole. 85 mm is common on aluminium. Write down whatever you get.
  3. Measure the flat metal before the glass, on both faces, from the door edge to where the glass bead or infill panel starts. The lock panels need to sit flat on metal and not hang over the glass.
  4. Lift the handle and watch the door edge. If bolts shoot out at the top and bottom as well as the middle, it’s a multipoint lock. Stop there and send us a photo, because that changes the job.
  5. Measure the full thickness of the door leaf. The spindle, the through-bolts and any cylinder are all cut to it.

Then take four photos: the door edge showing the faceplate, the handle from inside, the handle from outside, and the whole door from a few steps back. Those four photos answer most fit questions before anyone drives out to your villa.

Prices are our listed prices on the day of writing. Fitting in Abu Dhabi and the other emirates is AED 550 for a mortise lock and AED 450 for a cylinder.

The slim mortise route

The Altix RX is our narrow-profile lock for this job. Its listing says it’s for swing doors, not sliders, and it comes with its own 2585 mortise, so the lock body gets replaced along with the handles. You can open it with a fingerprint (it stores up to 100), a passcode, a card, Bluetooth through the TTLock app, or one of the two mechanical keys. The RX is rated IP65 and runs on four AAA cells.

Use this route when your door already has a 25 by 85 mm body. The new body goes into the same cavity, and nobody should need to cut the profile.

The smart cylinder route

The Altix CL1X leaves the lock body and handles alone. It replaces the euro cylinder, the part your key goes into, and puts a fingerprint reader, card reader and keypad on the cylinder itself. Power comes from three AAA cells, and two metal keys are in the box.

That suits an aluminium door that already works well, where you don’t want to change the look. Renters like it because the old cylinder goes back in on move-out. The catch is length. A euro cylinder is sized to the door thickness either side of the cam, and our CL1X product page doesn’t publish a length range. Send us your door thickness and a photo of your current cylinder and we’ll confirm it before you buy.

Opening the door when you’re not there

Both locks talk over Bluetooth, so the app works when you’re standing at the door. To send a code or open up from the office, you need the Altix G2 gateway at AED 179.99, plugged in near the door. A battery lock can’t stay on Wi-Fi all day because the radio would flatten the cells in weeks, so it talks Bluetooth to a mains-powered gateway, and the gateway handles the internet.

What goes wrong on aluminium doors?

Most failures on these doors come from one skipped measurement.

Someone buys a standard lock online with a 60 mm backset, and the inside panel lands on the glass bead. There’s nowhere for the through-bolts. Best case, the lock goes back in the box. Worst case, somebody drills the profile in the wrong place and the door has a new hole in it.

A new lock body with a different latch position means the strike plate on the frame has to move. On aluminium that’s a clean job when it’s planned and an ugly one when it isn’t.

Aluminium doors vary in thickness more than timber doors, so spindle length matters. Too short and the handle doesn’t engage. Too long and it pushes the panels off the door.

Thin-walled profiles can bow a little when through-bolts are tightened hard. The handle then binds and people blame the lock. Sleeves or fitting plates inside the profile stop that.

Dark aluminium in the afternoon sun gets hot to the touch in July and August. The electronics sit inside the panel, but the fingerprint reader and keypad face out. If your door takes direct sun from noon onwards, tell us, and we’ll talk about which unlock method to lean on in summer. Our fingerprint sensors and humidity post covers the coastal side of this.

Service doors in older villas in Jumeirah, Mirdif and Al Barsha have often dropped on their hinges. A heavy hand on a mechanical handle hides that. A smart lock with a light latch won’t, so we check and adjust the door before fitting. That’s a big part of why a fitted price is worth more than a box on the doorstep.

Worked example: the kitchen door in an Arabian Ranches villa

This is how a typical job of this kind runs. A four-bedroom villa, aluminium kitchen door to the service yard, used by the family, a live-in helper, a driver and a weekly cleaning company.

  1. Saturday, 10:00. The owner measures the door. Backset 25 mm, centres 85 mm, door thickness 50 mm. The glass starts about 45 mm in from the edge. Single-point lock, no bolts at the top or bottom.
  2. 10:10. She sends the four photos on WhatsApp. We confirm the existing body is a standard 2585 and the RX fits the cavity.
  3. Monday, 11:00. Our technician arrives and takes off the old handles, cylinder and lock body. About fifteen minutes.
  4. 11:15. The RX mortise slides into the same cavity. The latch lines up with the existing strike, so the frame isn’t touched.
  5. 11:25. He cuts the spindle and through-bolts to suit 50 mm, fits sleeves inside the profile, and mounts the front and back panels.
  6. 11:40. Batteries in. He pairs the lock to the owner’s TTLock account, not his own, and gives her the admin role.
  7. 11:50. Fingerprints for the owner and her husband. A fingerprint and a card for the helper. A personal passcode for the driver.
  8. 12:00. A time-limited code for the cleaning company that only works on Tuesdays, 09:00 to 13:00.
  9. 12:10. He tests every method with the door open, then closed, and checks the handle springs back and the latch catches without a push.
  10. 12:15. Done. AED 599.99 for the lock and AED 450 for fitting, AED 1,049.99 in total. If she wants to change the cleaner’s code from the office, a G2 gateway adds AED 179.99.

Before Monday, the kitchen door had more keys in circulation than any other door in the house. Afterwards there were two, both in a drawer.

When should you not buy a smart lock for an aluminium door?

We’d rather say this before you’ve paid.

Don’t swap a multipoint lock for a single-point smart lock. If your door bolts at the top and bottom, a slim lock with one latch leaves it weaker than it was. Multipoint doors can be handled, but the job starts with photos.

Every lock in this post is for a swing door. Sliders use a hook bolt and a different mechanism, and none of these will fit.

Some aluminium doors in commercial buildings and on tower ground floors are on a fire escape route. Leave that hardware alone until building management and your fire consultant have signed off.

Check the profile before you spend anything. Bubbling paint, white powder at the joints, or a lock cavity that’s been cut and re-cut all mean the door won’t hold a new lock well. Fix the door first. We see this a lot near the sea on Palm Jumeirah and in Al Mamzar.

If you’re renting, get the landlord’s agreement in writing. The CL1X is the easiest to reverse, but it still changes the door. Our rented apartment post covers how to ask.

How can Altix help?

Send your four photos and three numbers (backset, centres, door thickness) to us on WhatsApp. We’ll tell you whether the RX or the CL1X fits, whether the latch will line up, and whether we need to see the door before quoting.

If a dimension isn’t on our product page, we’ll check it against your photo and tell you, rather than guess. Fitting is AED 450 for a mortise lock and AED 350 for a cylinder in Dubai and Sharjah, AED 550 and AED 450 in Abu Dhabi and the other emirates. Those are the prices that apply when you book with us.

FAQ

Can I fit any smart lock on an aluminium door?
No. Most smart locks sold in the UAE use a 60 mm backset lock body, and most aluminium doors take a narrow body with a 25 to 35 mm backset. You need a narrow-stile smart lock or a smart cylinder.

What does 2585 mean on a lock body?
A 25 mm backset with 85 mm between the handle spindle and the cylinder. It’s the common narrow body on aluminium doors, and it’s the body the Altix RX ships with.

Will a smart lock damage my aluminium door?
Not if the lock matches the existing body, because the new one goes into the same cavity. Damage happens when someone cuts the profile to force a wide-body lock into a narrow door.

Does a smart lock work on an aluminium and glass door?
Yes, as long as the lock panels sit on flat metal and not on the glass. Measure from the door edge to the glass bead on both faces before you buy.

Is a smart cylinder as secure as a full smart lock?
It uses your existing lock body, so the bolt is as strong as what your door already has. What it adds is access control: fingerprints, cards, codes and a log of who came in. If your current lock is sound, a cylinder is a sensible upgrade.

How long does fitting take on an aluminium door?
About an hour for a like-for-like swap on a 2585 body, plus time to set up users. Longer if the strike needs moving or the door needs adjusting on its hinges.

Can I put a smart lock on a balcony door in a tower?
On a swing door, yes, if it fits. On a slider, the locks in this post won’t work. Check your building’s rules as well, since some developers restrict changes to balcony doors.

Do I need a gateway?
Only to open the door or send codes when you’re away from it. Fingerprints, cards and passcodes all work without one. The G2 gateway is AED 179.99.
