Video Doorbell or a Lock With a Camera? Which One Your UAE Door Needs

If you’re in an apartment, the lock with a built-in camera is usually the better buy. Everything goes through the door you already control, so nothing gets drilled into a corridor wall that belongs to the building. If you’re in a villa, the video doorbell is usually the better buy, because the person you want to see is standing at the gate, not at your front door.

Plenty of people end up with both, and that’s fine. But only one of them is solving the problem you have, and the other one is AED 500 you didn’t need to spend this month.

What’s the difference between a video doorbell and a camera lock?

A video doorbell is a camera with a button on it. It mounts beside the door or at the gate, watches the approach, and rings a chime inside. It doesn’t open anything.

A camera lock is a smart lock with a lens in the outside panel, usually sitting where the peephole was. It sees whoever is standing directly in front of the door, and it unlocks the door.

They solve different halves of the same problem. The doorbell tells you someone’s coming, and the lock decides whether they get in.

Which one should you buy?

Apartment in a tower, one door onto a shared landing. Camera lock. The landing isn’t yours, the wall isn’t yours, and a doorbell pointed down a shared corridor is the fastest way to a complaint. The lock sees the person at your door and that’s the transaction you care about.

Villa with a gate and a front door ten or fifteen metres apart. Doorbell, at the gate. A camera in your front door is useless when the visitor is standing at the boundary wall pressing a bell that only makes a noise.

Holiday home or short-let. The lock matters more, because guests need codes and you need a log. The doorbell is the second purchase, not the first.

Shared or bed-space accommodation. Neither, at least not first. That’s an access control and personal storage problem, and we covered it in the shared housing access control checklist.

What can you buy in the UAE right now, and what does each cost?

Prices below were read off our own product pages the day this was written. They move. Check the page before you budget.

One detail on the DB2 that’s easy to miss. It carries a Bluetooth gateway inside it. On a compatible Altix TTLock lock, the doorbell is also the bridge that puts your lock online, so you don’t buy a separate gateway at AED 179.99. Will the doorbell and the lock talk to each other?

Only if they’re on the same platform. This is the mistake we see most, and it costs nothing to avoid if you decide the platform before you decide the hardware.

Buy a Tuya lock and a TTLock doorbell and everything still works. You’ll just have two apps, two accounts, two notification streams and no single timeline showing the bell press and the unlock next to each other. Everything functions. How long does the battery last, and why does the camera drain it?

A lock without a camera sleeps almost all day. The Bluetooth radio wakes for a fraction of a second when you touch it, then goes back down. That’s how four AA cells run eight to twelve months.

Put a camera and Wi-Fi in the same panel and the maths changes. The unit has to stay reachable on Wi-Fi, wake on motion, encode video and push it out. That’s why the AL501 ships with a 10,000 mAh rechargeable pack instead of AA cells.

The manufacturer quotes up to an average of 270 days per charge. Treat that as a ceiling, not a promise. On a door with heavy corridor traffic and motion sensitivity turned up, you’ll get less. We haven’t run an independent test on it, so we’re not going to quote you a number we didn’t measure.

Heat matters too, and this one is on the spec sheet. The SwitchBot doorbell is rated -20°C to 45°C operating. Shade temperature in the UAE hits 45°C in August, and a west-facing wall in direct afternoon sun goes well past it. Mount it under the porch overhang or on a shaded elevation. Lithium cells lose capacity faster when they’re cooked, and the same wall that kills the battery softens the adhesive.

What does UAE law say about pointing a camera at the corridor?

Most doorbell articles skip this. It’s the part that gets UAE residents into trouble.

Federal Decree-Law No. 34 of 2021 on Countering Rumours and Cybercrimes makes it an offence, under Article 44, to photograph or record a person without consent using an electronic device, in a public or a private place. The penalty runs to imprisonment of not less than six months and a fine between AED 150,000 and AED 500,000. UAE courts have read an intent requirement into the article, so a neighbour walking through the edge of your frame isn’t what it was written for. A camera permanently trained on your neighbour’s front door, recording and storing, is a different conversation.

What we tell customers to do, and this is our recommendation rather than the law:

1. Angle the unit down so the frame is your doormat and the person standing on it, not the landing.
2. Use the app’s privacy masking to black out the neighbour’s door.
3. Turn recording off for any motion zone that covers shared space.
4. If a neighbour asks what it records, tell them straight. In our experience that ends most of the argument before it starts.

We’re not lawyers. If you’re already in a dispute with a neighbour over a camera, get proper legal advice rather than advice from a lock shop.

Do you need SIRA approval for a doorbell camera?

Our reading is no, not for a camera on your own unit looking at your own door. SIRA regulates security systems and the companies that install them, and its CCTV rules bite on commercial premises and on the shared parts of buildings. The published guidance we can find puts private residences outside the approval requirement, with the caveat that the camera mustn’t intrude on neighbours or public space. If your situation is anything other than a single camera on your own doorway, confirm it with SIRA rather than with us.

The Owners Association is the harder part. In a Dubai tower the corridor, the landing and the wall beside your door are common property. An OA can prohibit unit owners from fixing anything to common walls, or from recording common areas, and that’s enforceable through your community rules. If the answer comes back no, that decides your purchase. A camera lock keeps everything inside the door leaf.

What breaks, and what it looks like when it breaks

A worked example: one parcel, eleven steps

Two-bedroom apartment in JLT. AL501 on the front door, no doorbell. Courier delivering on a Tuesday afternoon. Resident is at her desk in Business Bay.

1. 13:58 The courier steps out of the lift into the shared corridor. Nothing happens. The lock can’t see the lift.
2. 14:00:12 He reaches the door. The lock’s infrared and radar sensors pick him up at roughly a metre.
3. 14:00:14 The camera wakes and starts recording to the 32 GB card in the indoor chime unit.
4. 14:00:16 A push notification lands on her phone. She’s in a meeting, so it sits unopened for about ninety seconds.
5. 14:00:20 He presses the bell on the lock panel. The chime rings in an empty hallway.
6. 14:01:50 She opens the notification and taps live view. Two-way audio starts. She can see him and the parcel.
7. 14:01:58 She tells him to leave it at the door, then asks him to hold the label up to the lens so she can read the tracking number off it.
8. 14:02:30 He leaves. The clip records its motion tail and stops.
9. 18:40 She gets home, scrubs the timeline back to 14:00, and confirms nobody else came to the door in the four hours between.
10. Same evening She checks where the footage lives. It’s on the 32 GB card in the chime inside her flat, not in a cloud account, and there’s no subscription attached to it.
11. Two weeks later The courier company disputes the delivery. She exports the clip from the app and the dispute ends.

Look at what that sequence covered. The camera lock handled the transaction at the door and handed her the evidence she needed two weeks later. It gave her no warning before he arrived, and it never showed her the corridor. If those two things matter to you, add the doorbell.

What does it cost, installed?

The AED 450 is our published price for professional mortise smart lock installation in Dubai and Sharjah. Abu Dhabi and the other emirates are AED 550. That product covers fitting the lock. A doorbell is usually a twenty minute job you can do yourself with the bracket in the box, and if you’d rather we did it while the technician is already there, ask and we’ll fold it into the visit.

None of these carry a monthly fee. The AL501 stores locally on the 32 GB card in its chime, and the SwitchBot stores locally on your own microSD. That’s a real difference against the subscription-based brands, and over three years it’s the largest single number on the page.

Which one fits your door?

Buy the doorbell if the thing you want is warning. Someone approaching, a courier at the gate, a delivery you missed, a villa entrance you can’t see from inside.

Buy the camera lock if the thing you want is a record of who came to the door and control over who gets in, and if drilling the corridor wall is going to start an argument with your building.

If you’re securing a villa properly and the budget is there, take both, on the same app. Just leave the second purchase until the first has been through a UAE summer and you know how it behaves in August.

FAQ

Can I fit a video doorbell in a rented Dubai apartment?

Usually yes, if it goes on with adhesive and comes off clean. The complication isn’t your landlord, it’s the Owners Association and the fact that the wall beside your door is common property. Ask building management first, in writing.

Does a camera lock replace CCTV?

No. It watches one doorway at handle height and stores short clips. A CCTV system covers approaches, retains footage for a set period and, on commercial premises in Dubai, has to meet SIRA requirements. Treat them as two separate purchases solving two separate problems.

Do these need a subscription?

Not the ones we’ve listed. The AL501 records to a 32 GB card in its chime and the SwitchBot to a microSD you supply. Check any brand you’re considering, because plenty of the global names put motion history behind a monthly fee.

Will they work on my 5 GHz Wi-Fi?

No. Both doorbells and the AL501 are 2.4 GHz only. That’s a deliberate choice by the manufacturers, because 2.4 GHz travels through walls better and draws less power. If your router broadcasts one merged SSID, split it before you start pairing.

Can my neighbour object to my doorbell camera?

They can, and depending on where the camera points they may have grounds. Under Article 44 of the UAE cybercrime law, recording a person without consent is an offence where the intent is there. Angle it down, mask the neighbour’s door in the app, and keep recording off for shared space. In our experience that ends most of the argument.

Can I see my door while I’m outside the UAE?

Yes, as long as the device is on Wi-Fi and your phone has data. A camera lock needs Wi-Fi for that, not just Bluetooth, so check the model. We explained what a gateway does and doesn’t do in our guide to smart lock gateways.

What happens to the camera when the battery dies?

The camera stops. The lock keeps its mechanical override, so you still get in. The A7 Pro takes a USB-C power bank at the panel to bring it back up. Not every model has that port, so confirm it for the one you’re buying. There’s more in what happens if a smart lock fails.

Do I need a gateway as well?

If your lock is Bluetooth only and you want remote access, yes. If you’re buying the DB2 and a compatible TTLock lock, no, the doorbell has one inside it and that saves you AED 179.99.
